迈克尔小时候的愿望是踢足球而不是艺术表演，但是他的这种想法遭到了母亲的反对，因为她担心他会因此而受到伤害。于是，他就把目标转向艺术表演，梦想成为一个著名的演员。中学毕业后，迈克尔在坎卡基社区大学读书。大学毕业后，他在芝加哥的民族天然气公司做工，为该公司开挖地沟。此后不久，迈克尔来到了好莱坞，开始在影片中出演一些小的角色，并兼任保镖工作，他的雇主包括威尔·史密斯、马丁·劳伦斯、杰米·福克斯、LL·库尔·J和臭名昭著的B·I·G。

片是《刺激1995》导演德拉邦特在该片之后的又一部监狱题材的影片，但这次主演换成了当时正值巅峰时期的汤姆·汉克斯。虽然本片没有能延续《刺激1995》口碑上的神话，但也算表现不俗，颇受到一些好评。　在这部以“奇迹”为主要内容的影片中，奇迹没有被过度神化，而更多的展现的是仁慈和怜悯。奇迹因仁慈和怜悯而出现，也因为世界缺少这种仁慈和怜悯而消失。卡菲，这个如传说中的力士一般的黑巨人，不知道从哪里来，也不知道为什么会拥有奇迹的力量，但汤姆·汉克斯饰演的男主角，虽然没有奇迹的力量，但他却是人间仁慈与怜悯的拥有者，也成为被奇迹眷顾的幸运儿。　基本上，这部影片还是一部“主旋律”影片，宣扬爱与仁慈，惩戒恨与恶毒。尽管主题过于明确立意过于正确，但一来是奇迹部分处理得引人入胜，二来监狱死刑题材也算偏门（至少电椅死刑以前只是听说，却不知道还有这么些奇特的细节），所以整部影片还是非常好看，两个多小时的情节根本不觉得长，而且几个奇迹的场面却是能给人留下深刻的印象，算是一部“人道主义”的佳作吧。
